Samadhi: Becoming A Straight Line

Samadhi has become a buzz-word nowadays. People talk about Samadhi, write books on it, deliver talks, still it remains a mystery. We associate Samadhi with all kinds of things, and unfortunately, it has become a misleading word nowadays. It seems we know everything about Samadhi, but do not know the dimension well, that keeps us away from it. In this article, we are not going to get wooed by this concept even further. Rather, we are going to study the dimension that keeps us away from it. Reason being, we need to satisfy the pre-requisite, to enter this state, that pre-requisite being, dropping “ourselves.”  To understand this, we need to acquaint ourselves with the following facts.

Introduction

Firstly, we need to know, that what is Samadhi, and what keeps us away from being in this state. Samadhi, basically means, disconnecting from information, and being in the space of nothingness. Samadhi means, disconnected from information, we cut off from the world, which thrives on duality. Hence, in this state, we don’t feel positive, or negative, but become equanimous. Or, we lose the source of duality, and information, hence hit Samadhi. To understand this further, we need to acquaint ourselves with information, and duality. (Read: Science Of Mahashivratri)

The World Of Information

Firstly, to begin understanding Samadhi, we need to understand how we interact with the world, and impact of information. We obviously, are able to experience the world, because of influx of information that reaches us through our senses. Without this exchange of information, we cannot have any experience of the world. Further, do you know that, the world is just a thought in our mind?

Yes, do you remember how we are able to see the world? Light falls on objects, gets repelled, and creates an inverted image in retina that our mind processes as thoughts? Yes, the world is nothing, but a thought in our mind, and once we go thoughtless, the world ceases to exist.

People believe that, to reach Samadhi, we need to meditate, and completely stop our thoughts. However, it is evident that we fail, else Samadhi wouldn’t have become a mere concept. Do you know why? Because we are not willing to drop the source of information, that is “I” thought. Let us understand this further. (Read: Mental Health)

The Information “I”

To further understand what stops us from being in Samadhi, we need to come to terms with our information-bound identity. Our personality is simply collection of information, coming from genes, DNA, and sensory information. That is why, without information, we cannot even define ourselves. Furthermore, our thoughts also, are a result of information, because without information, we cannot think. For this reason, people often say that “I think therefore I’m.”

Now, if our identity becomes information and thinking, then compulsive thinking cannot be stopped. Because without thinking, who are we? Therefore, entering Samadhi, calls for a death, a living death of our information bound personality. When we drop information, we reach a state of nothingness, where there is no duality, or ups and downs. (Read: Truth About The Flow State)

The Dual Nature

The world, and our thoughts, thrives on duality and comparison. It is because of duality and comparison that we get to experience the world and our thoughts. For example, we know night, because there is day, we know positive, because there is negative, and so on. For this reason, many of us often say that “ups and downs are a part of life.” However, they are not a part of life, but the conditions that we need to have for a physical existence.

Therefore, in Samadhi, is a state of nothingness, we lose track of duality, and remain in an equanimous dimension. We completely cut off from information, hence ourselves, and the world, and merge with the divine. (Read: Ups And Downs Of Life)
